THE STORY OF JUNE

THEIR STORY

June has Autism. She also developed PTSD and anxiety (Agoraphobia) after a history of physical, verbal and sexual assault as a child, teen and adult.

Her conditions significantly affect her day-to-day life and she was unable to complete household and self-care tasks such as cooking and cleaning due to poor physical deconditioning and stress.

We partnered with June to provide movement-based therapy to help her manage her mental health symptoms including feelings of self-worth and self-confidence. Our shared goal was for her to feel more positive and less anxious.

June’s progress was slow to start, following many cancellations.

THE MiM DIFFERENCE

Initially, June requested home sessions where we mostly did Pilates exercises (pelvic floor strengthening focus), before progressing to boxing and some light weights. Because we are flexible and community-based, we are able to provide treatments in a clients’ homes around the Sunshine Coast, where they are most comfortable. This is well-suited to anyone who has issues leaving the house.

After 6 months of treatments at home, June built up her physical and mental strength and resilience so much that we began to take outside walks, at June’s request. She eventually felt so confident leaving the house, she was able to try out a local gym. At Mindfulness in Movement, we understand that everyone’s goals are different and that healing is all about quality, not quantity. A walk outside the home was a huge milestone.

THE RESULT

June has made meaningful improvements. Her physical and mental functional capacity has developed to the point where she can complete household tasks. Physically, she has seen a reduction in the physical pain caused by the assaults she experienced. As a person, she is more confident and less anxious.

June has come a long way. She now embraces her exercise physiology sessions as ‘me time’ and prioritises her sessions instead of cancelling them. She feels empowered and more confident.
