Trauma sensitive movement therapy

What is Trauma-informed movement therapy?

Exercise Physiology interventions with a health care professional that understands the complex impacts trauma can have on a person’s well-being. Trauma-informed care means that we appreciate how a person’s life history may have impacted their development, their behaviours and current situation

Trauma-informed therapy revolves around 5 key principles:

  1. Safety - Your Physiologist will create a therapeutic environment in which you feel safe (physically and emotionally), respected, validated and understood.

  2. Trustworthiness - It is often hard for survivors of trauma to trust people, and touch can be very difficult. Please know we are very conscious of this and will always ask your permission to touch or move you if it is required.

  3. Choice - Your choice and control is vital. Decisions about your treatment plan are not made for you, but with you.

  4. Collaboration - Treatment effects are maximized by working with your team of health professionals (if you have multiple practitioners) so everyone is supporting you towards your goals.

  5. Empowerment - Your Exercise Physiologist will select movements and activities that will empower you, increase your strength and resilience and build your skills in managing your own health.
