Hydrotherapy and Water-Based Exercise
The Mindfulness in Movement team love utilising the awesome hydrotherapy pools across the Sunshine Coast for our clients who want to use the water for therapy or an aquatic exercise program.
What is hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is a form of therapy that takes place in warm water. A hydrotherapy pool is heated to 30-33°C. Exercising in warm, soothing water is a very inviting way to experience therapy. Hydrotherapy sessions can include the use of equipment such as water dumbbells, noodles, boards and toys.
Why does hydrotherapy work?
Hydrotherapy pools support and warm the body, and calm the mind. The hydrotherapy pool reduces the weight on your joints, helping you feel weightless. This has physical and mental benefits. We carry the ‘weight’ of so many things around with us; it can be quite relaxing to have that weight lifted for a while. The warmth of the water is relaxing, especially during cooler months and can help aches and pains that may increase during the cooler weather.
Water-based movement therapy allows for resistance training, cardiovascular training and increasing range of movement.
Being in the water can be beneficial for musculoskeletal conditions when the injury (or even post-surgery) requires light resistance and a supported way to start moving again.
Do you suffer joint and muscle pain?
Water based therapy is especially valuable for conditions including:
cerebral palsy
hypermobility
arthritis
degenerative conditions
neurological conditions
multiple sclerosis
persistent pain
fibromyalgia
It can offer:
Reduced pain
Ability to perform exercises + freedom of movement not possible on land
Improved strength, balance, range of motion and coordination
Improved circulation and decreased swelling
Reduced muscle spasm, allowing relaxation
Improved water confidence
Improved mood and sleep.
Sunshine Coast Pools and Aquatic Centres
Luckily, most of the pools on the Sunshine Coast are heated year-round, but anyone who really feels the cold is encouraged to wear a wetsuit or a rashie!
We keep sessions interesting and fun for the children (and adults) by playing games in the water as part of their therapy.
Most of the aquatic centres have a hoist if required. Coolum and Beerwah have ramp access.
