4 Things that can affect your exercise therapy sessions (and what we can do about it)
At Mindfulness in Movement, we make it a priority to notice how our clients are feeling at each session. This includes evaluating your emotional and physical state. You see, how you feel as a person influences what you’re capable of when it comes to how you move. We know from experience that if you’re tired, you might be slower. If you’re stressed, you might fidget. If you have a sore leg, you might hobble.
That’s why, before each session we look at these 4 important areas:
1. Sleep
What time did you go to bed?
How long did you sleep for?
How was the quality of your sleep?
Poor sleep really impacts your ability to recover from injury or illness, leads to fatigue and can cause changes in your mood. Importantly for us, lack of sleep can also affect your balance, coordination and concentration, meaning some things may be physically unsafe to do!
2. Stress and Emotion
What are your current stress levels?
How is your mood today?
Stress can leave your muscles tight, which will affect the way you move. Stress can also get in the way of a good night’s sleep or impact your mood. If you’re feeling unmotivated, distracted or tired, your motivation to take part in a movement session might be low. It helps us to know this!
3. Your body
How is your body feeling today?
Do you have any niggles/ soreness or heaviness?
Are there any issues from the previous session?
If you’re feeling any pain or niggles, or have an injury, we need to adjust our session to suit you. Muscle tightness may also be a byproduct of your stress, so it can be a nice giveaway as to your emotional state!
4. Energy
How are your energy levels today?
Your energy levels help us understand how the answers to the above questions are directly impacting you today!
At Mindfulness in Movement, by asking these simple questions we can adapt each movement session to meet our clients where they’re at emotionally, mentally, and physically on any given day. By being conscious of the fact that movement is not just the physical repositioning of a body through muscle recruitment, but rather a connection between mind and body we can create a flexible program that is sensitive to our clients. We can help provide a program that encourages proper structure and a calmer mind and feels right for you on the day.
